What is performance nutrition?

The aim of performance nutrition is to optimise competition, training, recovery, and daily healthy eating practices, in order to maximise performance in a given sport, whilst excelling in all other areas of life.

What we eat has a major influence on all 3 key areas of exercise performance:

1. Physical capacity (exercise speed & duration)

2. Technical ability (sport-specific skills)

3. Cognitive performance (concentration, reaction time, etc.)

So getting your nutrition right is fundamental to performing at the top of your game.

A central part of performance nutrition is the understanding that your overall health and wellbeing play a vital role in your ability to perform at a high level consistently.

So we're not just talking about what we eat during the few hours in and around exercise.

Following a diet that maintains immune health, minimises injury risk, and cultivates a positive relationship with food is just as important as optimising acute fuelling strategies.

The key areas within performance nutrition, and those which my nutrition coaching encompasses, are:

  • Game/race day performance

    • Acute strategies before and during competition to maximise performance on the day, such as fuelling, hydration, and smart use of supplements & sports foods

  • Recovery

    • The readiness to compete or train again after exercise

  • Training adaptations

    • How effectively each training session moves you towards your goal

  • Body composition

    • Do you have the optimal amount of fat & muscle mass for your event?

  • Health

    • Does your diet provide sufficient energy & nutrients to optimise health?

  • Injury prevention

    • Diet and body composition affect injury risk and the rate of recovery

  • General wellbeing

    • Sleep, stress, social events, enjoyment of food & life in general are all influenced by our nutrition habits
